A Notary Public in Hong Kong is a solicitor holding an additional international notary qualification, authorised to verify signatures, witness documents and certify copies as true reproductions of the original. Not all solicitors are notaries only those registered with the Hong Kong Society of Notaries and holding the relevant qualification may notarise a document. 

Once a document is notarised, it may need further authentication before it is accepted abroad. For documents destined for countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention, the High Court of Hong Kong attaches an apostille certificate confirming the authenticity of the notary's signature and seal, after which the document is valid in all other member countries without further steps. Hong Kong has also introduced an e-Apostille service as an alternative to the paper-based process. Documents intended for non-Convention countries may require additional consular authentication instead.
